Return to Assignments Differentiation of standard functions

Assignment 24

Differentiate:

y=5(6\cos^2(\frac{1}{2}x)-3)

Solution

We apply the following double angle formula:

\cos(x)=2\cos^2(\frac{1}{2}x)-1

and thus the original function can be rewritten as follows:

y=5\cdot3\cos(x)

The derivative of this function is:

y'=-15\sin(x)
