Differentiate:

$y=\displaystyle\frac{x^3+3}{x}$

Solution

This function can be differentiated by applying the quotient rule (straightforward), but it is faster to simplify it first.

We can write:

$y=\displaystyle\frac{x^3}{x}+\displaystyle\frac{3}{x}=x^2+3x^{-1}$

The derivative of this function is:

$y'=2x+3.-x^{-2}=2x-\displaystyle\frac{3}{x^2}$
