Solve the following equation:

$(2x-1)(x+2)+4x-3=x^2+x(x-3)$

Solution

At first sight this seems a quadratic equation because both the left- and right-hand side contain a square. However, this is not the case. If we work out the formula the squares disappear:

$2x^2+3x-2+4x-3=2x^2-3x$

$3x-2+4x-3=-3x$

$10x=5$ and thus:

$x=\displaystyle\frac{1}{2}$
